Concrete for Clay Soil and Gum-Lined Streets

The streets around Ringwood East, Heathmont and Ringwood North fall away toward Mullum Mullum Creek, and Eastland marks the busy centre. Homes are mostly post-war and 1960s to 1980s brick veneer, with cream brick, some weatherboard, and many older blocks split into units and townhouses. That means timber-framed walls on a concrete slab or strip footings, built over clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Old driveways and paths here crack, tilt and pond water.

Cool, damp winters slow curing, and eucalypts along the streets send roots under footpaths and crossovers. Shaded paths grow moss and turn slippery. We plan for it with correct excavation depth, reinforcement mesh, drainage falls away from the house and a textured finish for grip.
